Detroit Month of Design

Detroit Month of Design returns this September 2019 for a month long celebration of design!

Detroit Month of Design is a citywide celebration of creativity that gathers designers and the greater community to celebrate Detroit’s role as a national and global design capital. Partners from emerging studios, established companies, and educational institutions across Detroit will come together to show off their latest work and ideas. The cross-disciplinary events take place in all corners of the city, highlighting the work that makes Detroit a UNESCO City of Design.

A complete schedule will be available in early August. Most events are free and open to the public.

Designing Cultural Connections in Detroit

Over the fall semester, students will work in teams through weekly workshops and activities on campus and in Detroit to prepare entries for the Detroit Institute of the Arts (DIA) Plaza and Midtown Cultural Connections International Design Competition. The aim of this competition is to connect the DIA and surrounding cultural district with neighboring communities through design. Interdisciplinary student teams will develop user-centered information solutions and designs that would better integrate the DIA in its unique geography, connect with the neighboring collection of cultural assets, and engage the surrounding community. All teams will receive comprehensive training and guidance on topics such as project scoping, client management, dealing with ambiguity, presenting and report formatting, reflection, and assessment. Winning teams will receive $2500 dollars. Students from all schools and disciplines are invited to apply.
