Nearly all major corporations release ESG reports, and global ESG (environmental, social, governance) assets under management are projected to pass $50 trillion in 2025. Some see ESG data as an essential tool to guide corporations toward positive social impact. Yet the investment strategy has become controversial, and some states have banned the use of ESG standards for government funds. What is ESG, how can I get and use ESG data, and why is a seemingly niche investment strategy suddenly so political? Students can learn more at one of these two upcoming workshops.

+Impact Studio Course Kicks Off
The +Impact Studio course (BA670) met for the first time this Winter on Wednesday January 10th, and welcomed nearly 50 students. Taught by Jerry Davis and Cat Johnson, and attended by grad students from eight schools and colleges across campus, the Winter 2024 students will design models of equitable enterprise for the green energy transition in Detroit.

Our alumni founder, Jarrad Henderson discusses the genesis of his business, Pop-up Docs. Pop-up Docs’ mission is to strengthen the visual journalism diversity pipeline by bringing resources to the front doors of creative but underserved populations.

Semester in Detroit
Semester in Detroit accepts undergraduate students from all schools and departments at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, UM-Dearborn, UM-Flint and Grand Valley State University. All students, from First years to Seniors or Super Seniors are eligible to apply. Applicants should have a strong interest in the city of Detroit and in questioning dominant narratives; engaging with challenging new perspectives on contemporary issues; and building community with one another, SiD faculty and staff, and community members at internship sites and beyond.

2024 Global Case Writing Competitions

DEI Global Case Writing Competition – WDI Publishing and U-M’s Ross School of Business have launched the 2024 DEI Global Case Writing Competition, the fourth consecutive year for the contest, which includes cash prizes for top three finishers. The competition is an opportunity to shape the academic conversation and improve diversity, equity and inclusion within businesses.
2024 Health Tech Global Case Writing Competition – WDI Publishing on the lookout for academic business case studies highlighting innovative products or services that have transformed healthcare outcomes in low- and middle-income countries. The COVID-19 pandemic spurred a wave of advancements, from telehealth to efficient vaccine distribution. Join the competition, share your insights, and stand a chance to win cash prizes!

Firearm Injury Prevention Internship
The Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention is pleased to announce 5 paid internship positions for graduate and upper-level undergraduate students for the summer of 2024. The internships are designed for University of Michigan students interested in firearm injury prevention research experiences. Interns will be matched with a mentor from the University of Michigan Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention. Each selected applicant will be provided a stipend of $1,900 per month for three months (for a minimum of 318 hours).

Michigan Gun Violence Prevention Summit

Michigan has passed an astounding amount of gun violence prevention legislation in 2023: universal background checks, extreme risk protection orders, safe storage, and protections for domestic violence survivors. Now, the hard work of implementing those laws begins. To this end, we will convene practitioners in several fields, including law enforcement, education, youth & youth workers, local government, domestic violence, suicide prevention, academia, social services, community violence intervention, health care, and community organizing groups.

Circular Plastics Challenge
Net Impact’s Circular Plastics Challenge needs innovative leaders like you to imagine how we can craft a truly circular economy! Industry-leading companies are eager for fresh, out-of-the-box thinking to push the plastics industry to become more circular, at scale. In an effort towards making progress on the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Production and Consumption, Net Impact’s Circular Plastics Challenge calls upon innovators, systems-thinkers, and practitioners from all walks of life and levels of study to consider, “How might we increase the supply of rPET to create a more circular economy for plastics?”

SUMMER IMPACT INTERNSHIP FUNDING APPLICATION
Each summer, Business+Impact awards competitive grants for summer internships to MBAs and BBA juniors in the Ross School of Business as well as MPP students in the Ford School of Public Policy.
The application for these monetary awards has a first deadline of Thurs, Mar. 7, and a final deadline of Thurs, Apr. 18. Award decisions will be based on the level of need (taking into account other funding being received), consideration of the position, the organization’s impact, and the quality of the application.
IMPACT CAREER SYMPOSIUM
Join us for the first annual Impact Career Symposium on January 18th and 19th in Blau Colloquium, hosted by Net Impact @ Ross and in partnership with Business Leaders for Diverse Abilities (BLDA), Human Capital Club (HCC), and Business+Impact. This event will feature a networking dinner, coffee chats, mock interviews, interactive skill-building workshops, and speakers from companies such as General Motors, Meta, JP Morgan, Camber Collective, Opportunity International, and a talk by Karen Johns (CEO of Net Impact)!
