History, Power, and the Stories We Tell: Making Race, Space, and Memory at Michigan Medicine

Michigan Medicine is one of the oldest schools at U-M, educating future physicians since 1850.

But institutional histories have often erased the experiences of Black medical students—particularly those from its early years.

Join us to hear from CREATE Center postdoctoral research fellow Tonya Kneff-Chang about how she has used a series of walking tours to explore how power has influenced the making and remaking of these historical accounts over time.

Together, we’ll explore how the hidden stories of Black medical students are embedded in everyday spaces and how past struggles over race, class, and gender continue to influence U-M’s campus.
