Impact Studio Welcomes its Biggest Cohort Yet
A lot of great things are coming out of the Impact Studio this semester, and a number of posts on the program offer a unique glimpse into the exciting work being done here. First of all, the Impact Studio kicks off an exciting academic year and welcomes its newest cohort of Founders and Applebaum Impact Design Fellows! Hailing from nine different degree programs across campus, this dynamic group of social innovators comprises a highly diverse mix of undergraduate and graduate students!

Business+Impact Announces its Largest-Ever Cohort of Board Fellows and Nonprofit Partners
Welcome to our 2024-25 Board Fellowship participants! This year’s Board Fellowship Program brings together 39 partner organizations and 63 students from 10 U-M schools The Fellows will serve on the governing boards of these nonprofits for the academic year and complete a strategic project by April 2025.

Community Engagement and Alternative Break Grants
The Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning seeks grant proposals from registered student organizations to support community engagement and civic participation. This grant program aims to strengthen partnerships between UM student groups, the Ginsberg Center, and external community organizations (i.e. non-profits, government agencies, etc.) to address community-identified needs. Funding supports existing and new partnerships between student organizations and external community partners, emphasizing sustainable partnerships. Applicants can apply for the Community Engagement Grant or the Alternative Break Grant through the same application and eligibility process.
Social Justice Changemaker Lecture

Join us for a discussion with Nikole Hannah-Jones, the Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of the 1619 Project and a staff writer at the New York Times Magazine. The Social Justice Changemaker Lecture was established by a generous gift from Dr. Neil C. Hawkins and Annmarie F. Hawkins and the Hawkins Family. This annual lecture focuses on important global social justice issues including race and nationality, immigration and refugees, income inequality, gender identity and sexual orientation, education, health, and mental and physical disabilities.

A2 Data Dive is a student-led initiative at UMSI that hosts an annual data hackathon for good. The annual service event brings together students, faculty, and data professionals to help local nonprofit and civic organizations analyze data, solve problems and develop impactful solutions through data. A2 Data Dive is coordinated by student leaders who work with community partners to prepare the data and lead students in conducting data analysis on the day of the event.

Centering Justice: Power in the People

In October’s Centering Justice episode we explore what deep democracy says about power and how it challenges traditional power structures. Deep democracy insists that real change comes from sharing power, not concentrating it, and ensuring marginalized voices are truly heard. We’ll break down how power dynamics operate in society, why conflict can be a tool for redistributing power–especially towards communities that are often left out of decision-making.
